Bob and Nellie is a novelette based, in part upon the author's early life and that of his family. The author dealt with South Carolina and Massachusetts during the period 1876-1900 and hoped to help heal the sectional conflicts through this work.

Charles Macbeth Cain was a student at Clemson in 1903; he worked as a pharmacist for seventy years. His paternal grandfather, William Cain, was a leader in the secession movement. His maternal grandfather, Charles Macbeth, was mayor of Charleston, S.C. before, during, and after the Civil War. Family anecdotes and memories served as the basis for his novelette.
